In her installation En travers, Sarah Minutillo addresses the audience as an individual questioning her relationship with different registers of images of urban territories. The artist produces usual images of the street alongside private and intimate images.
« My main artistic concerns push me to question the complex web of relationships that images maintain between themselves and the way we tackle them. Images can come to us in different registers : moral, affective, aesthetic ; a multitude of categories in which ordinary and extraordinary can meet. My work is a continuing return journey between the private and public spheres and if the used photographs are sometimes those of a particular era, the topics and ideas that they tackle are contemporary. My collection of personal images sometimes encourages the anecdote but an image can echo another one, attracting the spectator in his own repertoire, his own imagination.
In a practice combining drawing, painting and installation, decontextualization and obliteration of images are crucial factors of my work. I start from legible and meaningful images to make them illegible by painting and drawing. By transporting a medium and its given context into another medium, while keeping the conscious trace of this transfer, I benefit from its new possibilities.
I combine my savoir-faire with the authenticity and the fragility of an unposed drawing ; various mediums, various formats. I unveil images and confront them as I select them, instinctively. »
