HIGH FIVE
#4
Sophie Ullrich
Curator : Saryna Nyssen
93159 En Féronstrée
Sophie Ullrich’s Difficulties with the high five thumbs its nose at Covid-19. These linear and graphic hands, symbol of her work, stage a vain attempt of greeting. The two protagonists are reduced to the simple curves of two hands. These two individuals, it’s us today, they meet. In a jerky and groping dance, they try a greeting, a « high five », to finally avoid each other, miss each other by a matter of minutes, and not touch each other. The animation humorously deals with our new everyday life : the insecurity where social distancing is at the center of the new social interactions. Our rituals evolve. However, the superposition of the images created by the selected techniques suggests that the individuals skim past each other and that corporal interaction remains induced.
The animation is an analogical projection, distant mechanical process replaced by digital technologies… just like our relationships during the lockdown. The drawn sheets are moved onto an abstract pictorial background. The function of the painted canvas is a distant decor. By doing so, Sophie Ullrich offers a perspective physically included and the play of shadows becomes reality.
